New FreeAc Research on the Impact of War on Ukraine’s Higher Education

A new research report has been published within the Erasmus+ project Promoting Academic Freedom in Ukraine (FreeAc), led in its drafting by WUS Austria, analysing the impact of Russia’s full-scale invasion on Ukraine’s higher education sector.

The study highlights the severe disruption caused by the war, including damage to university infrastructure, displacement of students and staff, and significant challenges to academic freedom. Many academics continue to work under difficult conditions, while psychological stress, declining enrolment, and financial pressures further strain institutions.

At the same time, the report underlines the resilience of Ukrainian universities. Despite ongoing challenges, institutions have adapted through online and hybrid learning, maintained international cooperation, and supported displaced academic communities.

The findings point to urgent priorities for recovery, including reintegration support, mental health services, and sustained investment in higher education, alongside strong protection of academic freedom. The report is available here in English and Ukrainian language.
