Human Rights Day 2025 – Our Everyday Rights, Our Shared Responsibility

Every year on 10 December, the world marks Human Rights Day, commemorating the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) by the United Nations in 1948. This year, it is under the UN campaign theme “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials.”

At WUS Austria, we believe that human rights are not abstract ideals; they are the foundations of our daily lives, shaping how we live, work, learn, and interact. On this Human Rights Day, we reflect on this vision and reaffirm our commitment to it.

Our current projects span education, empowerment and social justice. Through our project Werte im Wandel – Generationendialog zur Zukunft der Demokratie (Changing Values – Intergenerational Dialogue on the Future of Democracy), we engage younger and older generations in discourse about democratic values and human rights. Our project MENTOR – More than a joke: humour in times of dictatorships explores how humour, satire, and creativity helped people resist authoritarian regimes. FreeAc – Promoting Academic Freedom in Ukraine strengthens Ukrainian academia by protecting academic freedom as a fundamental human right and fostering a resilient, rights-based higher education system. Meanwhile, SHER – Sustainable Higher Education and Research in Kosovo aims to strengthen institutional capacities and human-rights awareness in higher education.

Human Rights Day reminds us that rights are not given – they must be defended, practiced and advanced together. We invite everyone to join us in this endeavour: in our projects, in public debate, and in everyday life.
