Tbilisi. On 10 March 2018, Louise Sperl (WUS AT) provided a guest lecture/workshop on migration and sustainable development at Tbilisi State University for students of the MA Programme on Migration Management. The lecture addressed concepts such as human and sustainable development, explored the nexus between sustainable development and migration and introduced tools to for measuring development – such as the Human Development Index (HDI) and Gender Inequality Index (GII). The lecture further introduced the Agenda 2030 & the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the nexus between the SDGs and migration. In interactive working groups, students explored and discussed migration related targets of the SDGs in the specific context of Georgia. Furthermore, the New York Declaration on Refugees and Migrants as well as progress made in developing a Global Compact on Refugees as well as a Global Compact for safe, orderly and regular migration were discussed.

The guest lecture was organised within the scope of the EU funded project PROMIG - Promoting Migration Studies in Higher Education: The project uses the experiences of the MA programs in migration studies within the South Caucasus region to enhance the development of a similar MA program in Afghanistan for ensuring that Afghan Universities are capable to offer curricula/education and research in the field of migration.
