Wolfgang Benedek, Professor

Position within the company: Director of the Supervisory Board


Wolfgang Benedek is a founding member of WUS Austria and has served as its chairman since 1992. In this function, he chairs the board of WUS Austria, which gives the overall direction for the work of the organisation and assists the development of its activities. He has been instrumental for developing WUS programs in the Balkans to assist students and universities during the war-time of the 90s and after.

Wolfgang Benedek is professor of international law at the University of Graz, with a focus on human rights, human security and international economic law and also teaches at the Vienna Diplomatic Academy and the Master Programmes on Human Rights and Democratisation in Venice and Sarajevo. His support for the universities of Sarajevo and Prishtina in particular has been recognized by honorary doctorates and an honorary citizenship of Sarajevo.

Veronika Nitsche, MBA

Position within the company: Member of the Executive Board, Head of Finance


Veronika Nitsche has been working for WUS Austria since 2001. The key qualifications of Veronika Nitsche are international project management, organizational development and fundraising and she has a profound knowledge of trends and developments in higher education. Consequently, her main tasks are the development and implementation of projects in the field of higher education in South-Eastern Europe. Additionally, through her long experience in the non-profit-sector, she contributes as a member of the Executive Board to the strategic objectives of the organisztion. Veronika Nitsche earned a degree in "International Project Management" and the MBA in General Management from the University of Graz.

Mag.a Martina Handler, M.A.

Position within the company: Project Manager



Martina Handler joined the WUS Austria Team in October 2007. She is responsible for the management of several projects in the areas of Higher Education Development and is a part of the project development team of WUS Austria.

She brings in several years of work experience in international projectmanagement, event organization and PR for the Austrian women’s empowermentorganization “Women without Borders”.

She earned her first degree in Communication Science with a special focus on intercultural communication at the University of Vienna and has a background in journalism. In 2007, she finished her M.A. in Peace, Development and Conflict Transformation at the Universities of Innsbruck and Castellón/ Spain.

Mag.a Maria Brunnhofer (on maternity leave)

Position within the company: Project Manager (on maternity leave)


Maria Brunnhofer joined WUS Austria in May 2010. Within the company she is responsible for the implementation of selected EU Projects (Tempus, Erasmus+) and project development. She is experienced in the areas of internationalization of higher education, quality assurance and linking higher education with the labor market. She earned a Diploma Degree in English and a combination of studies from the Karl-Franzens University of Graz.

MMag. Ines Šuh (on maternity leave)

Position within the company: Project Manager (on maternity leave)


Ines Šuh joined WUS Austria as a student in charge of the Business Case Competition within the scope of the Balkan Case Challenge (BCC). In 2010 she assumed the position of a Project Officer and is responsible for curriculum development and  visiting professors projects  financed by the Austrian Development Agency and the ERSTE Stiftung (BGP+, CDP+, PATTERNS_Lectures). Additionally, she supports the EU funded Tempus project Competence which aims at further development of competence based curricula and strengthening the link between universities and the labor market.

Ines Šuh earned a double Master’s Degree in Business Administration (International Management and Finances) from the University of Graz. She is currently enrolled in a PhD program at the same institution.

Brigitte Sihorsch

Position within the company: Office administrator


Brigitte Sihorsch joined WUS Austria as Office Administrator in April 2010.

She is responsible for the back office and supports the WUS-Team in all administrative matters.

In the past twenty years she was involved in several education and health projects in Turkey, Guatemala  and Albania.

Dr.in Louise Sperl

Position within the company: Project Manager


Louise Sperl joined WUS Austria as a project manager in January 2014. She is responsible for different EU projects and project development with particular emphasis on access to higher education for vulnerable and marginalised groups. Louise has more than twelve years of work experience as a project manager, researcher and technical expert in the areas of human rights, development and gender. Louise has previously worked with the United Nations  (UNDP, UNOWA) and different non-governmental organisations, think-tanks and academia. 

Louise holds an MA and doctorate degree in law from Vienna University. In her PhD thesis she has specialised on international human rights law (economic and social human rights, refugees).

Mag.a Michaela Handke, MES

Position within the company: Project Manager


Michaela Handke joined WUS Austria in May 2010. Within the company she is responsible for the implementation of selected EU Projects (Tempus/EuropeAid) and project development. Her work experience relates to the fields of quality assurance in higher education, curriculum development, and linking higher education to the labour market, as well as migration and development. 

She furthermore contributes to the organisational and strategic development of WUS Austria together with the Executive Board, with focus on human resource management/development.

She holds a degree in Slavic Studies/Russian from the Karl-Franzens University in Graz and finished a second degree in European Studies at the University of Vienna in autumn 2009.

Mag. Marc Schwärzli

Position within the company: Finance and Project Manager


Marc Schwärzli joined the WUS Austria Team in April 2016 as financial manager. He is also responsible for the management of several projects in the areas of Higher Education Development, Arts, Culture and Sports.

He holds a degree in Business Administration from the Karl-Franzens-University in Graz and brings in several years of work experience in national and international projects. He is accountant and a former lecturer in business informatics, operations research and accounting.
