Monitoring visit and workshop in Nairobi/Kenya
Nairobi. More than 20 teenage mothers and social workers met in Nairobi on October 18, 2023, to exchange experiences on the status quo regarding the realization of the right to health for teenage mothers and children in the slum of Korogocho/Nairobi. During the workshop, WUS Austria colleagues engaged in a joint dialogue with participants and jointly discussed existing challenges and possible ways forward. The workshop and project visit were organized in the framework of the project “Promotion of Children’s Rights in the Slums of Nairobi”, funded by FairStyria.
Furthermore, WUS Austria staff attended the so-called Children’s Programme which takes place at a primary school in Korogocho on a weekly basis, providing children from the slums with the opportunity to play and engage in sports. Visits were also organised to different project beneficiaries in Korogocho (female-headed households), a sewing workshop for women as well as a local religious community.
The aim of the project is to promote the right to health of children and underage mothers in the slums of Nairobi. This will be achieved through awareness raising in social work with a particular focus on drug prevention. Main results of the project include:
(1) a literature review on the situation of children in Korogocho and risks with regard to drug use,
(2) Preparation of a guideline for social workers on drug prevention in social work based on in-depth/focus group interviews,
(3) Training for social workers in Nairobi, and
(4) Outreach work by social workers with the aim of promoting a healthy lifestyle among children and ultimately preventing drug abuse of children and adolescent mothers.
