Before 2008, the survival rates of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients treated in Kosovo at the University Clinic in Pristina were low. Existing and available international treatment protocols were inapplicable due to the low local medical standards. Almost all of the surviving patients had been treated in institutions in different foreign countries.
In 2012, due to an increasing amount of relapses, it was proposed that patients should be treated more intensively in order to improve the long-term survival. This program is planned to develop a facility adjusted, cost optimized protocol for treatment of children with all providing the best clinical outcome possible in Kosovo within two years.
The project is called “Treatmentof paediatric acute lymphoblastic anaemia with a modified resource-conserved BFM protocol in Kosovo: Monitoring outcome using minimal residual disease evaluation by flow cytometry and evaluation of toxicity and costs” and its objective is to intensify the treatment of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and to fight the increasing amount of elapses.
Later that day a press conference was held in the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Unit in University Clinic Center in Pristina where representatives of the project presented the achievements of the project to the local media.
