REGENLAW - launch of Energy and Environmental Law Consultancy Bureau in Tbilisi, Georgia

Tbilisi. On Monday February 24, 2014, the Consultancy Bureau at the Georgian Technical University in Tbilisi was launched. Around 30 representatives of the Georgian government, the European Union, public and private companies, university staff and students attended the event.

The key idea repeatedly used by the speakers was that the Consultancy Bureau is launched at the right time: an agreement recently signed between Georgia and European Union opens the door to integration of Georgia into the Energy European Community. It will trigger an enormous effort of homogenization in energy in environment law and will present a great opportunity for the Consultancy Bureau in opinion of Mr. Boris Iarochevitch (Deputy of the EU Ambassador) and Marita Arabidze (Head of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Division. Ministry of Energia of Georgia). At the same time public companies like Georgian State Electro System are convinced that the Consultancy Bureau can play a fundamental role to advice the companies in this new environmental and energetic context.

The Consultancy Bureau is part of the European Union Tempus project RegenLaw - Energy and Environmental Law: the energy sector in Europe and in the world has changed rapidly over the last few years under the influence of trends towards globalization, liberalization, competition, demonopolization, and strengthening of regulation in the field. Parallel to the evolvement of European internal energy market, the true pan-European implications of the process began to unfold. It is the wider objective of the project to enable Georgia (GE) and Ukraine (UE) to face the challenges of dealing with Energy and Environment policies in accordance with EU and international standards through capacity and institutional building measures. An ultimate goal of this project is to prepare a new generation of lawyers capable of performing legal services within different energy domains by using the latest achievements in energy and environmental law.
