Gender Book Tour: Presentation of the book "Gendering Post-Socialist Transition. Studies of Changing Gender Perspectives"
Budapest. Within the project „Gender Book Tour“, initiated by ERSTE Foundation and implemented by WUS Austria, a presentation of the book "Gendering Post-Socialist Transition. Studies of Changing Gender Perspectives" was organised on the 11th of June at the Open Society Archives in Budapest.
It was a panel discussion which gathered panelists of different profiles from three countries: Marina Blagojevic Hughson from Serbia (author), Karl Kaser from Austria (editor), Judit Acsady from Hungary (author) and Anna Wessely (reviewer). The moderation was conducted by Croline Hornstein Tomic from Croatia (editor).
Panelists made introductory remarks focusing on the following topics:
o Anna Wessely – General presentation of the book
o Marina Blagojevic Hughson – Chapter from the book: “Single parents in the Western Balkans: Between emotions and market”
o Judit Acsady – Traditional and alternative patterns in the social construction of care in Hungary after the transition
o Karl Kaser – Re-traditionalisation after the transition
We were
glad to see a large audience of different profiles in the wonderful venue of
the Open Society Archives situated in the centre of Budapest. They engaged in a
lively discussion at the reception after the official part of the event and the
short artistic performance. The atmosphere was improved by the fantastic
musical repertoire, which kept some of the guest dancing until the end of the
evening. It was a wonderful ending of the series of the book presentation which
was planned for this summer semester.
We are thankful to the Institute for Sociology of the Centre for Social Sciences,
Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and Open Society Archives for hosting the event
and for their local support!
The book "Gendering Post-Socialist Transition. Studies of Changing Gender Perspectives" was developed as Volume 1 of the ERSTE Foundation Series as a result of the research which explored the social constructions of femininity and masculinity and the role of women in Central & South East Europe with focus on the transition beginning in 1989. This was the last event within the series of the book presentations, which were organised in Belgrade, Zagreb, Sofia and Budapest. Its aim is to raise awareness and support the discussion among the academics, researchers, students, NGOs, media and the general public regarding the issue of gender and especially the transformation of gender identities in Central and South East Europe.
